Nootropic research peptides: Selank and Semax
BritishPeps research team · Updated 18 July 2026 · ~5 min read
Selank and Semax are the two peptides most associated with cognition-focused research. Both came out of Russian research programmes and appear frequently in the neuroscience literature. This guide introduces them. It is informational only: both are supplied exclusively for in-vitro laboratory research and are not intended for human or veterinary use.
Selank
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analogue of tuftsin, an immunomodulatory peptide. In research it is studied in relation to anxiety models, BDNF expression and cognitive function. Its anxiolytic profile is the most-cited theme in the literature.
Semax
Semax is a synthetic analogue of an ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) fragment. It is studied in cognition, neuroprotection and BDNF-expression research. Where Selank is associated mainly with anxiety models, Semax leans towards cognition and neuroprotection — which is why the two are usually discussed together.
A shared theme: neuropeptide signalling
Both compounds are short peptides studied for their interaction with neuropeptide and neurotrophic pathways. As with all preclinical research, the literature describes what is being investigated, not settled results for any subject.
Handling and storage
Selank and Semax ship lyophilised, are stored at −20 °C and are reconstituted with bacteriostatic water before being kept at 2–8 °C. The reconstitution guide covers the procedure.
Frequently asked questions
Are Selank and Semax for human use?
No. Both are supplied exclusively for in-vitro laboratory research and are not intended for human or veterinary use.
What is the difference between Selank and Semax?
In the literature, Selank is associated mainly with anxiety models and Semax with cognition and neuroprotection. They derive from peptides of different origin.
How should they be stored?
Keep the lyophilised vials at −20 °C, protected from light. After reconstitution, keep them refrigerated at 2–8 °C.
